Dr. Alexey Lipatov delivered a seminar titled “Exploring 2D Materials for Sensors, Electronic and Memory Devices” to undergraduate participants of the NSF-funded Li-SMART Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at South Dakota Mines on June 6th, 2025. The presentation introduced students to the fundamentals of two-dimensional (2D) materials, highlighting their potential for advancing sensors, electronics, and data storage technologies. Ten undergraduate students from across the West and Midwest EPSCoR region attended the seminar as part of their 10-week research experience.

Rise Jongeling, a K-12 teacher, has visited SD Mines as part of the NSF Research Experience for Teachers (RET) program. This NSF RET program is centered on the theme of Energy and Sustainability and provides opportunities for K-12 educators to conduct scientific and engineering research, engage in professional development, and develop curriculum for subsequent use in their classrooms. Rise visited our campus on August 2021 and spend several days working on the project involving the fabrication of mechanically exfoliated flakes of 2D materials such as graphene, MoS2, and h-BN.
